Skin Biopsies
Diagnostic tool
Skin biopsies are essential diagnostic tools used to investigate abnormal skin conditions. By removing a sample of skin, we can identify potential issues and determine the most effective treatment option(s).
By referral only. Please contact your primary care provider.

How It Works
Skin biopsies involve extracting a small sample of skin tissue to be examined microscopically. There are several methods, including punch biopsies, shave biopsies and excisional biopsies. The technique used depends on the type and location of the skin lesion.
During the procedure, the doctor will numb the area with a local anesthetic and carefully take a sample. We then send the sample to a laboratory for analysis, where pathologists diagnose various conditions like skin cancer, infections, or inflammatory diseases. This process is essential for providing accurate and timely treatments based on the findings.
These services are covered by MSP. Please obtain a referral from your Primary Care Provider to Dr. Arthur Vasquez (09874).

FAQS
What does a skin biopsy procedure involve?
The skin biopsy procedure typically begins with a consultation, during which a physician will assess the area of concern.
Once we determine the biopsy method, we numb the skin with a local anesthetic. A small sample of tissue is then removed and sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The entire process usually takes less than an hour, and you can return to your daily activities shortly afterward.
Is a skin biopsy painful?
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during a skin biopsy due to the local anesthetic used. While you may feel a slight pinch or pressure when the anesthetic is injected and during the biopsy itself, the procedure is generally well-tolerated.
Afterward, some patients may experience mild soreness or sensitivity in the area, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Are there any risks associated with skin biopsies?
While skin biopsies are generally safe procedures, they do carry some risks, such as infection, bleeding, or scarring at the biopsy site. However, these complications are rare.
We will provide you with aftercare instructions to minimize any potential risks and ensure proper healing. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge, contact us or your Primary Care Provider promptly.
How long does it take to get biopsy results?
The timeframe for receiving skin biopsy results can vary based on the laboratory and the specific tests performed.
Typically, results are available within a week, but some specialized tests may take longer. We will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the results and any necessary treatment options based on the findings.
